Privacy-first AI surveillance uses edge computing to process video data locally. Facial geometry never leaves the camera. Some retailers split the difference with consent-based zones. High-value areas (jewelry, electronics, pharmacy) have clear signage: “Advanced surveillance in use.   2. Catalog your current surveillance capabilities – many retailers discover they’re already using biometric features they didn’t know were enabled

  4. Design consent mechanisms for those specific zones (signage, app-based opt-in for loyalty members, website disclosures)
  5. Vet vendors specifically on data handling practices – request their most recent security audit and previous client references
  6. Build a data deletion workflow before you collect the first byte of biometric data
  7. Train your loss prevention team on what they can and cannot do with AI-flagged incidents

The vendor conversation should include these specific questions: Where exactly will our data be stored? Can we specify data residency? What happens when a customer requests their data be deleted? Who has access to raw footage? What’s your liability position if we face privacy violations?

Document everything. Washington’s privacy law requires retailers to maintain records of their data handling practices. California’s CCPA has similar provisions. Your documentation isn’t just good practice – it’s often a legal requirement.

One regional chain I work with created a privacy-first surveillance pilot in five stores. They used edge-processing cameras in electronics and pharmacy sections only, with clear signage and a QR code linking to their privacy policy. Shrinkage dropped 23% in those departments.
